Red Hay is a new, vibrant bluegrass duo consisting of Birk Mariegaard (guitar, vocals) from Middelfart and Holger Sund (double bass, backing vocals) from Davinde near Odense. With roots in traditional bluegrass and inspiration from names like Billy Strings and Doc Watson, they play with a rarely seen intensity and musicality for their age.

Birk, 14, and Holger, 13, met at the South Danish Folk Music Talent School in the band Folk Noise, where their shared passion for acoustic folk music took shape. During the summer of 2025, Red Hay has performed on the pedestrian street in Odense and more recently at the Climate Folk Meeting in Middelfart – performances that sparked great enthusiasm and attention from the audience.

The positive response has already opened new doors, and the duo can now look forward to performing at the Nashville Nights festival in Odense. Red Hay unites youthful curiosity with a deep love for the bluegrass tradition – and the audience can expect joy, raw energy, and a lot of fiery string work. The name Red Hay, of course, comes from the fact that they both have flaming red hair.
