Show: Sunday

Maja Francis has rapidly become one of Sweden’s most unique voices and prominent singer-songwriters. With a distinct and emotionally charged musical style, she has earned the moniker “Emo Dolly Parton,” capturing the essence of her personal and gripping music.

Born and raised in the coastal city Ängelholm in south of Sweden during the 1990s, Maja’s passion for music and singing began to take shape at a young age. During her teenage years, she discovered a particular affinity for songwriting and started creating her own songs to express her thoughts and feelings. In 2016, Maja had her breakthrough with the single “Last Days Of Dancing,” a song co-written with Veronica Maggio and Petter Winberg from Amason. This track not only established her as a promising artist but also garnered significant attention in Sweden.

Maja’s single “Mama” saw her collaborating with close friends Klara and Johanna Söderberg of First Aid Kit. The video premiered in Holler Country Magazine and was performed live before a million viewers at the Nobel Prize ceremony on Swedish television. She also made a guest appearance on First Aid Kit’s album “Who By Fire” with her rendition of “Famous Blue Raincoat.”

The second single from her debut album, “Anxious Angel,” gained significant attention when it was featured in the final scene of the Netflix series “Love & Anarchy,” becoming the most Shazamed song in Germany at the time. Maja’s video for “PMS Party” and her ‘emo linedance’ created a buzz, establishing a new sing-along anthem for PMS when performed live on one of Sweden’s oldest stages and TV shows.

Other notable singles like “This Woman’s Work,” “Tiny Tornados,” and “Lava Love” further solidified Maja’s position as the emo queen in the intersection of pop, singer-songwriter, and Americana genres. Her unique style impressed American artist Sierra Ferrell, who invited Maja to open her shows in 2022.

After a successful 2023, which included participating in the TV show “Så Mycket Bättre,” a sold-out summer tour, and serving as a special guest on First Aid Kit’s European tour, Maja has continued to rise. She recently released a live album from her performance at Way Out West last summer. This spring, she joined Anna Ternheim and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for three sold-out concerts, blending her own material with tribute songs to country music and her second home, Nashville.

In 2024, Maja Francis will follow up her successful year with new material. In March, she released “Hello Cowboy,” the first single from her upcoming album set for release on September 6th.

Maja Francis stands out as a bold and authentic voice in modern music, with a career marked by heartfelt songwriting, evocative performances, and a distinctive blend of pop and country influences.
